Don’t forget that October 10th is the average date of the first frost in Santa Fe. If you haven’t already, here are some things you need to do:

• Plant a ground cover in vacant beds to add nitrogen to your soil and give you green manure.
• Bring houseplants in before it gets too cold.
• Mulch and/or cover items like lettuce and carrots to prevent freezing.
• Harvest vegetables like kale and Brussels sprouts.
• Cut back on watering as plants will start to go dormant now.
• Continue planting spring-blooming bulbs, peonies, pansies and ornamental cabbages.
• Plant cool-weather vegetables in a protected area.
• If you have a lawn, fertilize the cool season grasses with a high nitrogen fertilizer. Reseed where necessary.
