October Garden Tasks
By Sue Austin
Don’t forget that October 10th is the average date of the first frost in Santa Fe. If you haven’t already, here are some things you need to do:
- Plant a ground cover in vacant beds to add nitrogen to your soil and give you green manure.
- Bring houseplants in before it gets too cold.
- Mulch and/or cover items like lettuce and carrots to prevent freezing.
- Harvest vegetables like kale and Brussels sprouts.
- Cut back on watering as plants will start to go dormant now.
- Continue planting spring-blooming bulbs, peonies, pansies and ornamental cabbages.
- Plant cool-weather vegetables in a protected area.
- If you have a lawn, fertilize the cool season grasses with a high nitrogen fertilizer. Reseed where necessary.
Enjoy our gorgeous fall days!
