Audubon Wildlife Attracting Demonstration Garden

In a nutshell…

Description/History:
Master Gardeners took on the courtyard garden at the Randall Davey Audubon Center as a project in Spring ’03. After major pruning and cleanup, initial trees, shrubs and perennials were planted in spring ’04. Every spring we prune, clean up and add more plants. The garden is mulched in spring and fall, and over the summer months of June, July and August we staff (an intern and a Master Gardener) “Ask a Master Gardener” in the garden. Routine maintenance is also done at this time. We work with the Audubon staff to make this an educational opportunity for Day Camp students, visitors to the garden and MG volunteers.

Location:
Randall Davey Audubon Center at the end of Upper Canyon Road

Goal:
Have a wide selection of wildlife attracting plants represented in the garden, with emphasis on xeric and native. Provide an educational experience, with opportunities for visitors to talk with Master Gardeners, informational handouts and labels on all of the plants. To promote MGA as a community educational resource.

Looking for volunteers who:
…enjoy hands on gardening, making planting recommendations, planting, pruning, weeding, mulching and talking with visitors in the garden. Interns learn xeric and native plant cultural practices and weed/wildflower identification.

Type of physical work performed:
Volunteers prune, clean up garden, plant perennials and mulch in spring. Summer is “Ask a Master Gardener” and garden maintenance (mostly weeding). Fall is planting bulbs, applying yum yum and mulching. Being on knees or sitting on ground, bending over, pulling, but no heavy lifting.
