2019 Funding Update From  SFMGA (501c3) to SFEMG

1/7/2020

The 2019 Board of the SFMGA would like to share with all members, the public and friends of the SFEMG and SFMGA organizations, a brief review of 2019.   The 2019 year represented the first year of the Santa Fe Master Gardeners separation into two distinct organizations as a result of changes at NMSU.   The Santa Fe Extension Master Gardeners (SFEMG.org) is now the day-to-day organization under the NMSU extension office and handles all the projects, Master Gardener training, and all other related Extension Master Gardener initiatives.   The Santa Fe Master Gardeners Association (SFMGA.org), the former legacy organization, is currently providing additional funding support to the SFEMG as a 501c3. [see the earlier Q&A posting on the SFMGA.org website for more detail]

As such, we are pleased to report that in 2019 the following funding support was made to the SFEMG for ongoing and new initiatives:
  • Funding for a second Seed School Instructor to be trained after the launch of the first successful Seed School in 2018.  $735
  • Replacement of the old Master Gardener Extension office computer -- a real workhorse for the 'Hot Line' work for the public's education! $1135
  • Funding for the SNaPP (Santa Fe Native Plant Project) towards the creation of a Native Plant Demonstration and Working Garden $2000
This was a total of $3870 of funding supporting the work of the Santa Fe Master Gardeners this year!

SFMGA Board Meeting
August, 14th 2019
Extension Office Classroom Annex
Present: Kathy Brechner, Chesney Gulas, Cullen Hallmark, Helena van Heiningen, Bonnie Martin, Jamie Painter, Karen Ramage
Jamie called the meeting to order at approximately 5:45pm

  • Minutes of  July 16, 2019 meeting were unanimously approved
  • Discussion on the topic of how the 2020 board would be configured. Directors have ultimate responsibility for the corporation and may designate officer positions.  Minimal corporate requirements are: President, Secretary and Treasurer
  • It was suggested that a directorship consisting of 5 people be elected.
  • Agreement was reached to defer any type of dues structure for the 2020 year but it would be worthwhile to reach out to past Master Gardener members who may no longer be active in the SFEMG.  A motion was made that there would be NO membership dues levied for the 2020 year. CH moved, JP seconded.  Motion carried unanimously.
  • An additional motion was made to open the SFMGA membership to any present SFEMGA member, any past SFEMGA member or intern or, other residents who are interested in this organization.  Membership for someone not already a Master Gardener would be made upon the submission of an application  reviewed by the board and to be posted on the SFMGA.org website.  This policy would become effective in the 2020 year once an application has been created.   CH moved, JP seconded.  Motion carries unanimously.
  • A motion was made to have an election for the 2020 SFMGA Board of directors of five (5) persons.  A slate of nominees will be brought forward to the membership at the close of nominations no later than September 15, 2019.  Electronic voting will close on September 30th. Voting is open to all members.   KB moved, HvH seconded.  Motion carries unanimously.
Election procedures:
    K. Brechner will create an e-blast and send to current membership seeking candidates for board service in the SFMGA for the 2020 year.  This should go out by the end of August but not later than Sept. 1st. to create a slate of nominees for presentation to the membership.
Electronic ballots (via Survey Monkey) will be used for the election and voting will be completed by the end of September. Results will be tallied and presented at the next board meeting prior to announcement to the membership.
Meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:00pm
Minutes respectfully submitted: Kathy Brechner
